World generation with Settlers of Catan part deux

Creating a random world with Settlers of Catan games pieces. This is a continuation of Part 1 that I posted the other day.

Step 1: Throw randomized piles of tiles onto convenient surface. In my case, it was my 2x2 coffee table in my living room.

Step 2:Arrange tiles roughly into groups of islands / continents.

Step 3: Put all tiles together in some logical way.

Step 4: Record to hex paper. If you are using the water tiles from an older set as extra tiles, treat them as random types of ground. Then use the following table to determine what kind of land they will be.

Using a d10 ( or a d5 if you have one), roll on the following chart to replace your sea tiles with a land type.

1,6field
2,7forest
3,8pasture
4,9mountain
5,10hills

So, after a little bit of work in throwing tiles, arranging them, recording them to hex paper, then putting them into Hexographer, the final product looks like this. Please note, that this is exceptionally high level detail of what you can find in a particular hex. A hex might not exclusively contain the land type that is there. That step comes later.

The next step for me after this is to decide on a hex scale for the world, then actually flesh out the world at a better resolution. I think that I might go with something along the lines of 100-150 km per hex. That gives me plenty of room to scale up a particular continent/island to provide some more meaningful detail to it for towns, castles, monster dens, and adventuring.
